Things We Never Got Over is a romantic contemporary novel that is written in the first person by Naomi who is trying to restart her life in a new town and has been warned by Knox that he has no desire for a woman like Naomi in his life. It is one of these books which feels too long at the beginning, absolutely perfect in the middle, and still so short at the end.
I loved it! Although I believe it starts a bit slow and there is a bit too much focus on the small-town feel, it’s those slow moments that make this shine in the latter half of the viewing. Our hero is a rude protector who insults our heroine with his words when cuddling her with his body, filling their confrontations with interesting sexual tension. I enjoyed the quirkiness and the change from the dysfunctional hero and heroine and the evolution in their physical relationship. They matched each other perfectly with their opposites: smokin’ hot and swoony chemistry in this case. Yes, it’s really long. Probably too long. But this was such a satisfactory read.
Things We Never Got Over is another slow-burn romance that I enjoyed. I hope you would enjoy it more if you decide to read it.

Things We Never Got Over
The story is set in Portland where two twins are raised – one is called Naomi and is very extroverted and another is called Tina and is very shy. Naomi is a bride who ran away from her wedding and faces the call from her identical sister for help.
Start
On her arrival to the little town of Knockemout, Virginia she encounters the very attractive Knox Morgan who although grumpy is ready and willing to help her and her niece Waylay whom her twin had left on the side of the road. Naomi’s ship comes across a deserted Knockemout and decides to settle there only to realize her attraction to Knox is getting in the way of starting a new life especially because he keeps sending mixed signals. They get to know one another especially after Naomi’s parents presumed the duo was dating meaning their relationship is indeed fake.
I did not find the book particularly engrossing but however when I came to the second part of the book it appeared to be interesting. This is one book that has once more brought to the fore the reason why I can never tend to like the ‘Enemies to lovers’ theme.
Characters
The main characters Naomi and Knox, their friends seemed quite young for the type of actions they were doing, and “the banter” between them was just too much for me. I can see why people adored the story because “eventually” it touched the issues like trauma of childhood, fear of attachment due to bad experience with abandonment, need to be apologetic and so on. Many may connect with these things and sympathize with the characters (whereas the rest of my 3 stars come from) but it did not need to be this long (over 500 pages) and the drama never seemed to stop in addition it became increasingly melodramatic throughout the novel/series. What I can say is that the parts with smut were very interesting to read and I was happy for Waylay plus the happily ever after but this does not align with my expectations in any way.
Comment
This book may be enjoyable for those who are into the ‘enemies to lovers’ romance and high drama but in my case, it is definitely not it. I have another book of this author coming out this year and I would not mind having another one of her books but if it is the same troupe I do not want it.

The Author of Things We Never Got Over
Lucy is a Wall Street Journal and #1 Amazon Kindle Store bestseller of romantic comedies and contemporary romance. She grew up in rural Pennsylvania with a lot of time on her hands and a big imagination. She was the oldest of three in a book-obsessed household. Dinners were often spent in silence while family members had their noses buried in books. A passion for writing took hold at five when she taught her brother to write his name on the bathroom door.
She started writing (on paper) in the second grade, first about pilgrims on the Mayflower and over the years graduated to essays, articles, blogs, and finally books. “Pretend You’re Mine” was her runaway hit and she’s been writing full-time ever since.
Non-romance-writing jobs have included event planner, bartender, newspaper lackey, and yoga instructor. Lucy and Mr. Lucy, enjoy spending time with their 1.7 million nieces and nephews and laying on beaches with umbrella drinks.
Comment
I would give this book 3.5/5 if possible. The first two chapters were so cringe, but I LOVED the feel good moments. My favorite love story in this book was between Naomi and Waylan. Bear in mind that story is the most important factor in fiction and, therefore, it should not be a chief concern for writing a book review for a novel.
